Hundreds of residents in Alvescot, Oxfordshire, will benefit from faster internet download speeds after a new exchange was opened in the village.

The Better Broadband for Oxfordshire programme, which is run by Oxfordshire County Council, BT and the UK government, is aiming to have 90 per cent of premises in the county switched onto speeds of at least 24Mbps by the end of 2015.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who is also the local MP for Witney, was on hand to open the exchange and praised the benefits it will bring to residents in the area.

"The UK already does more business online than any other European country and widespread access to superfast speeds will provide a welcome boost to Oxfordshire’s economy," he said.

Better Broadband for Oxfordshire is part of the wider BDUK programme, which aims to extend superfast download speeds to 95 per cent of the country by 2017.
