North Wales is set to become the first region to benefit from a £425 million super-fast broadband rollout, BT has revealed.

The Welsh government has prioritised up to 30,000 properties in and around Bangor, Caernarfon, Dolgellau, Pwllheli, Menai Bridge and Porthmadog, with these areas due to receive faster speeds by June.

Speaking to the Business Post, BT's director for Wales Ann Beynon said the launch of the government-backed Superfast Cymru initiative is an "exciting day" for the country.

"This ambitious project will boost the productivity of local businesses and help to attract a more diverse range of high-growth companies to the area," she commented.

"It will play a major role in creating a more prosperous Wales."

Once the work is complete, properties across north Wales will be able to access speeds of up to 80Mbps.

The project will involve the installation of 3,000 broadband cabinets and 17,500km of fibre optic cable.

When combined with commercial broadband rollouts, the Superfast Cymru scheme will help to bring next-generation speeds within reach of 96 per cent of Welsh premises.
