Representatives from Nottinghamshire County Council have been given a first-hand insight into the benefits they can hope to enjoy following the installation of fibre optic broadband.

Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire is a huge rollout project that is being carried out by BT in collaboration with local and district councils.

Staff from the service provider were on hand to show councillors more about the technology at an event at County Hall in Nottingham.

The first phase of Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire will take place between now and March 2016, with 52,000 homes and businesses expected to be connected during that period, reports the Mansfield and Ashfield Chad.

Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Alan Rhodes was impressed with the plans for the new network, explaining that the move would put Nottinghamshire residents on more of an even keel in terms of social and economic connectivity.

He said: "This work is helping us to get closer to our goal of ending the digital divide in Nottinghamshire and bring higher online speeds for video, shopping, file sharing and social networking to more Nottinghamshire homes and businesses."
