Politicians learn about fibre broadband in East Lothian
East Lothian MP Fiona O'Donnell and MSP for the area Iain Gray met with representatives from BT yesterday (30 July 2014) to find out about the benefits fibre broadband is bringing to the community.

The pair visited a green roadside cabinet in Tranent that has recently gone live to learn about how the high-speed technology works.

Currently, 22,500 homes and businesses in East Lothian can connect to the superfast fibre optic service, with the new network covering properties in Tranent, Cockenzie, Prestonpans, Musselburgh and Dunbar.

Ms O'Donnell commented: "Fibre broadband has an essential role to play in boosting the local economy ... it's great news that thousands of local people can now choose to connect to this exciting technology."

Next in line to benefit from a connection to the fibre network will be Haddington, with 30,000 residential and commercial premises to be covered altogether by the time the rollout is complete.

Overall, BT has invested £2.5 billion in bringing better broadband to people in the UK.
