Rutland County Council confirms bid for fast broadband funds
Rutland County Council has confirmed it is making a £1.6 million application to the Regional Growth Fund in a bid to secure cash for super-fast broadband.

The local authority's Digital Rutland initiative aims to bring minimum speeds of ten Mbps to 95 per cent of businesses and 85 per cent of households in the area.

Ofcom research published earlier this month revealed the UK's average broadband speed in November and December 2010 stood at 6.2Mbps.

The body will look to secure further money to finance the project in the coming months.

Helen Briggs, the chief executive of Rutland County Council, said it has opened a tender process to identify a partner for the scheme. It is available to any companies that feel they can work with the administration to roll out high-speed broadband in the region.

"Some of our villages struggle to get a half-decent download speed which in this day and age is a real constraint," Ms Briggs added.
