Thousands more properties in Nottinghamshire will be connected to fibre optic broadband in the latest phase of BT's nationwide commercial rollout.

More than 13 million UK premises have already been hooked up to the network, which is expanding at a rate of around 100,000 properties every week.

The telecoms giant announced this week that it will roll out the technology to a further 19,000 homes and businesses in Nottinghamshire, with Radcliffe on Trent and Wollaton becoming the latest communities in the county to benefit from the scheme.

Upgrades are due to be completed by the end of spring 2014, by which time the number of Nottinghamshire properties with access to super-fast broadband will have risen to 369,000.

Over 226,000 local premises are already able to receive the service and BT is looking to further increase its coverage by partnering with the public sector.

Kay Cutts, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "Access to fast broadband is an essential tool for local businesses and I've no doubt it will be a catalyst for the creation of new jobs."
