The Deputy Head of Surrey County Council has said his county will have the fastest internet in the country by the end of 2014.

Peter Martin claimed the achievement would be of benefit to both the business and residential community and could boost the region's economy by as much as £30 million annually.

"We'll now push on from this milestone to make sure nearly everyone in Surrey enjoys the benefits that high speeds offer," the lawmaker added.

Mr Martin was speaking as his council's fibre optic broadband rollout programme reached its halfway point, with some 42,000 homes and businesses now benefiting from improved infrastructure.

Speaking on the achievement, Bill Murphy, BT's Managing Director for Next Generation Access, said: "Today's announcement is another important milestone for a partnership which is making real progress."

So far, the Superfast Surrey project has seen 348 extra street-side cabinets installed, but this will grow to 620 by the end of 2014.
