Consumers have been told that it can be well worth their while to switch their broadband provider in order to get a better deal.

That's because customer service levels and types of product offered can vary significantly between different broadband providers, according to Ceri Stanaway, a spokesperson for Which?.

She also pointed out that people's satisfaction levels with their broadband services may partly depend on their experiences with other home utilities that may be bundled in with their broadband, such as their landline telephone or TV service.

"If you're not happy with your provider, then switch," she stressed. "Don't assume that all providers are the same."

And it may be more important than ever for Britons to ensure they have a reliable and fast broadband connection, as one campaigner has claimed that home internet access is now a "fundamentally important" aspect of modern life in Britain.

Peter Brett, deputy campaigns officer at the Pirate Party UK, called for consumer internet access to be "protected, not increasingly restricted" as he spoke out against the government's Digital Economy Bill.
