Three more Edinburgh communities to benefit from fibre broadband
Fibre optic broadband access will be brought to three communities in Edinburgh as part of a project by service provider BT.

Most of the city already has the superfast connection thanks to a £2.5 billion rollout. However, the areas served by the Portobello, Fountainbridge and Waverley exchanges will now also receive the service by the end of spring 2014.

The move will increase the number of homes and businesses in Edinburgh with fibre optic access from 85,700 to 178,700.

BT has stated this will be the final announcement regarding the Edinburgh rollout. This means that - subject to technical issues - all work on the development project in the city will be completed by next year's deadline.

It is part of a wider scheme that aims to bring fibre optic broadband technology to 85 per cent of Scotland by the end of 2015 and 95 per cent of the country by the end of 2017.
