UK Broadband could deploy Swindon Wi-Fi network
Wireless internet provider UK Broadband could be set to step in and save a Swindon Borough Council (SBC) scheme to deploy free Wi-Fi across the Wiltshire town.

The local authority had previously taken out a £400,000 loan to finance its deal with Digital City to fund borough-wide fast broadband connectivity, but was ultimately unable to repay the money.

But the council's dreams of launching a wireless service could be realised by UK Broadband, which is expected to enter an agreement with Capita and SBC to offer ultra-fast 4G web access to local residents and businesses, reports the Swindon Advertiser.

A meeting was held yesterday (September 22nd 2011) between UK Broadband chief executive Nicholas James and policymakers at the council to explain how the scheme will work.

It is believed that the council will make money from the initiative without having to stump up any investment capital upfront.

However, unlike the previous plan, the wireless broadband access will not be available free of charge immediately after launch, although fees may be axed once the service is established.

A spokesperson for UK Broadband explained the discussions with the local council involve the deployment of what is described as the country's first hybrid wireless broadband network to include 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband technology.

"The hybrid network combines a high-speed wireless fixed link network with a 4G LTE high-speed mobile data network," they said.

"This means that high-speed, reliable, fixed and mobile data services that offer a range of benefits for the public sector, businesses and consumers would be available across Swindon during next year."

UK Broadband holds more radio spectrum suitable for delivering 4G broadband access than any other private provider in the country.

It offers services, equipment, solutions and wireless data capacity to the public sector, channel partners, internet service providers and telecoms firms.
