UK broadband speeds falling behind, claims Akamai exec
Broadband speeds in the UK are slower than those in some eastern European countries.

According to Akamai Technologies, while British authorities may have good intentions to improve broadband provision, government processes slow their endeavours down.

The company's director of market intelligence David Belson told the V3 website: "I have seen some reports of the British government trying to speed up broadband."

However, it was pointed out that while the UK's average connection speed reaches 3.9Mb/s, The Netherlands achieves 6.5Mb/s and the Czech Republic 5.3Mb/s.

Moreover, Romania boasted five cities in the top 100 registered fastest metropolitan connections, while the UK had none.

According to independent regulator Ofcom, average download speeds in the UK in May this year were 5.2Mb/s.

While that figure was a 58 per cent increase on speeds in April 2009, it represented just 45 per cent of 11.5Mb/s - the average "up to" speed presented by broadband advertisers.
