UK broadband uptake continues to grow
Fixed-line home broadband has continued to grow in the UK despite the recession, perhaps as a result of bundle providers like O2 and Virgin Media offering deals with the first three months free, a new report has found.

Broadband uptake rose by over one per cent during 2009 to see the UK fixed-line penetration to reach a new high of 29.8 per cent of the population, according to a report from the European Commission.

The 15th Single European Electronic Communications Market report found that while the overall spread of broadband in the UK was above the EU average, the growth rate had slowed over the last year.

Overall uptake of broadband in the UK is five per cent higher than in the rest of the EU, where the average is 24.8 per cent.

The UK has one of the biggest shares in the EU (78.4 per cent) of fixed broadband lines offering speeds of between 2 and 10 Mbps while the share of high-speed lines above 10Mbps was reported to be 19.8 per cent, which is below the EU average of 23.2 per cent.

I wish that the "up to" broadband speeds would not be quoted, as they in no way indicate tha actual speed. I am on an up to 10M, but get less than 0.5M, in fact no-one on an up to 10M will get this, it's not possible even if they connect inside the exchange.
