Vaizey says UK placing broadband at the heart of growth plans
The UK is on track with its plans to position broadband at the forefront of economic growth strategies, according to Communications Minister Ed Vaizey.

Speaking to the Cable Congress in London, Mr Vaizey claimed uptake of super-fast broadband is "impressive".

BT is currently making fibre optic broadband available to 100,000 new homes and businesses a week and combined with Virgin Media's upgrades, well over 650,000 customers signed up for super-fast speeds in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Furthermore, the UK is already positioned as one of the world leaders when it comes to the online economy, the politician insisted, with the internet contributing more than eight per cent of GDP.

The minister added: "Our flagship businesses are tapping into global markets and our consumers enjoy excellent choice and services when choosing their broadband and phones."

His comments come in the wake of a new Ofcom report that shows the UK is performing strongly in several broadband-related areas - such as coverage, take-up and price - when compared to France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
