Virgin Media fares well in new broadband speed study
Virgin Media's fibre optic cable broadband network has fared well in another study of average download speed tests in the UK.

The Net Index study, carried out by US firm Ookla, placed Virgin Media in second place on the list of UK internet service providers (ISPs), with speeds of 13.39Mb/s recorded.

It only ranked behind Telewest Broadband in the trials and came out ahead of the likes of Be, BT, Sky and TalkTalk.

Co-founder and managing partner of Ookla Mike Apgar said its ISP ranking tool could prove to be a valuable resource for people who are looking to switch providers, or sign up to broadband for the first time.

He claimed that it gives consumers access to "rich data that helps evaluate ISP performance close to home or throughout the world".

The results were published in the wake of Ofcom's latest study into the performance of UK broadband providers, in which Virgin Media was found to offer the fastest service in the country.
