Virgin Media job boost hailed by Manchester councillors
Manchester councillors have welcomed Virgin Media's plan to create dozens of new jobs in the south of the city in a bid to meet demand for its next-generation broadband and TV services.

The cable company announced last week that it will take on 90 engineers and 40 customer care staff in Wythenshawe as part of a nationwide move that will see 400 people given jobs.

According to Mancunian Matters, Labour councillor and Baguley representative Luke Raikes said Virgin Media's decision will provide a "welcome boost" to the economy of Wythenshawe.

"With both economic pressures and welfare reform set to hit family incomes in the coming months, the job opportunities this will bring to local people are needed now more than ever," he commented.

Liberal Democrat member for Northenden Mary Di Mauro added that the move will give more young men and women the opportunity to become professional engineers.

Virgin Media has enjoyed high levels of demand for its super-fast broadband service, with more than 419,000 connections added during the fourth quarter of 2012.
