Virgin Media launches superfast cable broadband trial in south Wales
The Welsh village of Crumlin will get access to up to 50Mb/s broadband thanks to a new scheme from Virgin Media.
Householders and businesses in Crumlin, Caerphilly are in line to benefit from the initiative, which will offer speeds of up to 50Mb/s.
It means that locals will be connected directly to Virgin Media's existing fibre optic cable broadband network, rather than relying on BT's infrastructure of copper wires.
The initiative is planned to get underway at the start of August 2010 and is expected to run into next year.
Executive director of broadband at Virgin Media Jon James noted that more than half of the UK population are already able to access its 50Mb/s service.
"[We] are pushing the boundaries to ensure that homes right across the UK benefit from ultrafast broadband," he added.
The first trial of this nature was launched by Virgin Media back in March. At the time, chief executive officer Neil Berkett said it would help the company "understand the possibilities of aerial deployment".
