Work has begun to lay subsea cables to the west coast of Scotland to enable homes and businesses in the area to connect to better broadband.

The operations are part of the £410 million Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband rollout programme, as well as the £146 million Highlands and Islands delivery project, which aim to bring the high-speed technology to local residents.

Among the first to benefit from an improved internet connection will be those in Mull, Largs, Cowal, Corran and Oban, to name just a few.

Network provider BT is managing the project, while the Orange Marine cable ship Rene Descartes will be carrying out the deep water work, supported by vessels including the Coastal Chariot and the MCS Ailsa.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon commented: "It's fantastic news that this network will open up the benefits of high-quality digital connectivity to our island communities."

She added the work should also have economic benefits for the isles on a long-term basis.

Overall, approximately 400 kilometres of cable will be laid to deliver the superfast service to residents and businesses.
