A community broadband initiative is set to deliver faster internet speeds to hundreds of residents at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire.

The remote RAF station is currently affected by slow or non-existent broadband service, making it extremely difficult for families to keep in touch with loved ones who are posted overseas via email, Skype, webcam and other methods.

However, internet service provider (ISP) ilovebroadband is set to bring an end to this issue by utilising the NYnet fibre optic broadband network to deploy speeds of up to 10Mbps to more than 400 residents at the facility.

NYnet's fibre-based infrastructure extends across North Yorkshire, from Whitley Bridge in the south to Whitby in the north.

A wireless internet solution serving the married quarters at RAF Leeming is set to be launched by ilovebroadband in the coming weeks.

Several other North Yorkshire communities, including Bradley's Both near Skipton, Barlby in Selby, Terrington and Carlton in Cleveland, are already benefiting from networks rolled out by the ISP.

Martyn Boswell, managing director of the company, revealed plans are in the pipeline for several other projects across north and east Yorkshire, specifically in areas where the provider can gain access to a fibre-based network but where existing broadband coverage is poor.

Commenting on the Leeming deployment, Mr Boswell described the project as an "interesting challenge" due to the difficulties in gaining permission to host equipment on certain buildings in order to ensure the strongest possible coverage.

"We are delighted that this is all in place and we are now rolling out the network across the married quarters. This should be completed by the first quarter of this year," he explained.

Business development director for NYnet Paul Crane added: "NYnet have been working closely with the RAF on this project for over three years now, so it is extremely satisfying for us to see the network being delivered."
