Broadband infrastructure "breakthrough" unveiled
Alcatel-Lucent claimed its LightRadio technology will signal the end of typical mobile masts.
The company launched its new LightRadio device at a special press event in London yesterday (February 7th 2011), claiming it can reduce technical complexity and keep energy usage and other operating costs to a minimum.
This product "radically" reduces the size of massive mobile masts, which the outfit described as being expensive to run and difficult to maintain.
It combines the various antennas that serve 2G, 3G and Long Term Evolution networks into a single unit that can be mounted on poles, attached to the sides of buildings or anywhere else that offers power and a broadband connection.
Alain Maloberti, senior vice president of network architecture and design at France Telecom and Orange, said: "[It] will potentially help us to achieve significant operating cost savings."
Chief executive officer of Alcatel-Lucent Ben Verwaayen added: "LightRadio will signal the end of the base station and the cell tower as we know it."
