BT to trial 1Gbps fibre optic broadband in Suffolk
BT will trial 1Gbps speeds as part of its future plans for fibre optic broadband development.

The telecoms giant revealed the test will take place in the Suffolk town of Kesgrave, with the scheme set to get underway in early 2011.

According to BT, the initiative is designed to demonstrate the maximum capabilities of its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) product, which it said can achieve 1Gbps downloads and 400Mbps upload speeds given suitable customer equipment and network conditions.

It comes ahead of the commercial launch of the company's FTTP offering next year.

Director of strategy at BT Liv Garfield stated the average consumer has no need for "Gigabit speeds" at present, but added: "It's important that we test the maximum speed capabilities of our fibre broadband product to ensure that it is fully future-proofed."

This announcement comes after BT revealed more than 20,000 properties in Warwick and Kenilworth will get access to the company's fibre optic broadband network over the coming weeks.
