Conservative MPs voice Yorkshire broadband concerns
A host of Yorkshire MPs have voiced their concerns over the lack of superfast broadband in rural areas of the county.
The vast majority of homes and businesses in the county have already been covered by commercial rollouts carried out by service provider BT, reports the Yorkshire Post.
This includes the NYnet project, which aims to connect 90 per cent of the region to superfast speeds. But politicians including Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams have claimed this will ultimately leave the remaining 10 per cent of properties neglected and stuck in a digital "slowlane".
He said: "With the project now halfway through, the problem is some villages will achieve only 2 Mbps speeds. They can see that is the case and feel they are being left in the slow lane.”
This is not the first time that MPs have aired their views on the issue. Last year, the government awarded an additional £3 million to local councils in the hope that coverage will increase to 92-93 per cent by next year.
