Cloud-based gaming services are set to become more popular as broadband speeds rise, according to an industry expert.
Expert says broadband speeds mean cloud gaming is inevitable
Increasing broadband speeds mean a move toward cloud-based gaming is "almost inevitable" in the coming years, according to author and videogame expert Tristan Donovan.

Mr Donovan predicted a future in which parents will tell their children that gamers were once forced to "go to shops and buy shiny disks and stick them in machines".

For cloud gaming to take off, consumers will also need to become comfortable with the idea that "everything they do gaming-wise" is being held remotely, he cautioned.

The expert stressed there are many reasons why the gaming industry is keen to embrace this move, such as getting round the problem of piracy.

Publishers will come up with a string of "quite attractive" models to support the service, he claimed, adding: "It'll be like getting Sky TV."

Despite Mr Donovan's confidence in cloud gaming, one such service - OnLive - has so far struggled to catch on.

BT, an investor in the service, told TechRadar last month that it is "highly likely" to write off its 2.6 per cent stake in the streaming venture.
