Home broadband is popular not only from an entertainment point of view, but also because it can help people to save money, according to an expert.

The internet is popular among consumers because it is seen as one of the best ways to compare prices of different products and find a bargain, said Hannah Kimuyu, director of paid search at online marketing agency Greenlight.

"People like to browse online before hitting the high street … but they are also comfortable with buying online as well," she explained.

The unparalleled convenience of online shopping is what makes it so popular, she added, as it is "a lot easier" to browse the latest products via the internet than it is to trail up and down the high street.

Online shopping appears to go from strength to strength, according to the latest sales figures published by IMRG.

An estimated £4.5 billion was spent online in March, representing a 15 per cent increase on the same month in 2009.
