Home broadband termination charges slashed by Ofcom
Broadband customers in the UK will find switching providers a lot easier after landline contract termination charges cuts were announced.

Providers of broadband bundles have agreed terms with the regulator Ofcom to reduce the charges they apply to customers who wish to buy out of a contract and switch provider.

Discussions between Ofcom and Virgin Media and TalkTalk took place over the last 18 months and resulted in significant reductions to so-called early termination charges for landline phone contracts.

Paying to get out of the TalkTalk Essential broadband bundle used to cost between just under £20 and just over £30, depending on location. The new charge is a flat £8.

The early termination charge for a Virgin Media broadband and home phone bundle has been reduced from just under £30 to between £5 and £10, dependent on how far into the contract it happens.

More than half of Brits have switched broadband provider at some point, according to research from Orchid Consulting.
