Newham welcomes broadband roll-out
Plans by broadband bundles provider BT to roll out superfast broadband to most of London have enjoyed a good response from local political leaders, it has been reported.

Newham is one of the first London boroughs earmarked for the project and its mayor has welcomed the decision, the Newham Recorder reports.

Sir Robin Wales told the paper: "I'm pleased that our residents and businesses will be among the first to reap the benefits of BT's fast broadband access."

"We're already the best connected borough in terms of transport infrastructure, now we'll be the best connected in others ways too."

Access to improved broadband put the borough in a good position to take advantage of the 2012 Olympic Games, he added.

BT announced that it planned to upgrade 114 exchanges as part of scheme to roll out high-speed fibre-optic broadband to 87 per cent of the capital's households in time for the London games.

London Mayor Boris Johnson also hailed the decision as a chance to build a "lifetime legacy" of better broadband access.
