Home broadband is the last expense that British consumers would cut back on in a bid to save money.

Research carried out by Opinion Matters on behalf of Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks revealed that more than nine in ten people are not prepared to give up their broadband connection if times got hard.

This figure is up from 81 per cent when the same study was conducted in 2009.

Respondents said they would rather cut their outgoings by stopping sports or gym memberships, downloading movies or music, enjoying nights out in bars or restaurants and purchasing their favourite branded products.

Head of retail banking for Yorkshire Bank Steve Fletcher commented: "Broadband internet access has clearly become a priority for those homes that have it."

A separate poll published by Sky News this week found broadband subscriptions and pets are the areas in which Brits are least prepared to curtail their spending.

Food was the expense that respondents are most willing to scrimp on.
