Ofcom pledges to secure optimal spectrum use
Ofcom has pledged to secure the optimal use of spectrum to support high-speed mobile broadband services as part of its priorities for the coming year.

The communications regulator stated its commitment to supporting the release of additional spectrum in the future in a bid to meet the growing consumer demand for mobile data.

According to Cisco's latest Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, worldwide mobile data traffic rose by 70 per cent in 2012 to 885 petabytes per month at the end of the year, up from 520 petabytes per month a year earlier.

Across the year as a whole, mobile data traffic was almost 12 times the size of the entire internet in 2000.

Ofcom's announcement outlines a total of five priority areas, including the promotion of effective competition and informed choice in the super-fast broadband market and boosting choice for consumers via clear information and efficient switching processes.
