Unbundled broadband lines surpass seven million
There are more than seven million unbundled broadband lines in the UK, the Office of the Telecommunication Adjudicator has announced.
Figures published by the Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator (OTA) show that at the end of August 2010, there were more than seven million unbundled lines across the country.
Unbundling allows BT's infrastructure to be used by its rivals - such as O2, Sky and TalkTalk - to offer broadband services to consumers and businesses.
On announcing this achievement, the OTA noted that more than a third of the broadband lines in the UK - including cable connections - are now delivered via unbundled lines.
"This demonstrates that growth seems to be continuing in a very healthy direction and that the competitive landscape continues to serve the needs of consumers," the body remarked.
At the end of August, BT announced that 15 million homes and companies across the country are now receiving their broadband via the telecoms giant's network.
It has added more than 2,000 connections per day since August 2002.
