Virgin Media aims at broadband TV
Virgin Media is planning to deliver a broadband-enabled television service as part of its plans to become a "digital superpower", it has been claimed.

The broadband bundles provider is looking at linking digital TV services to its superfast broadband network, in a move that rival Sky said it too was planning, according to the Daily Telegraph.

In an interview with the paper, the company's executive director of digital entertainment Cindy Rose explained that the home broadband firm would be working with Tivo, an American digital video recorder firm.

"There is a now a generation of people who are not satisfied with the linear TV experience – we need to be ready for them," she explained.

Watching TV over broadband obviously requires a very fast connection, such as fibre-optic and a lot of bandwidth.

IT management solutions firm Ipswitch recently warned that people watching the World Cup over their broadband connections while at work could put considerable strain on the UK's broadband network.
