Wireless broadband security not fully understood, says ICO
Four in ten people with wireless broadband connections do not understand their network security systems, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has warned.

An online survey conducted by YouGov found these subscribers are unaware of how to change their security settings, potentially leaving them open to identity theft and cyber crime.

The study also revealed 16 per cent of respondents with a home Wi-Fi network have failed to protect it, whether intentionally or unknowingly.

In the wake of this research, the ICO is calling for broadband providers, retailers and manufacturers to make sure clear guidance is supplied with wireless equipment.

Commenting on the results, the body's head of policy Steve Wood said: "People wouldn't go out and leave their front door unlocked, but many are still surfing the internet without adequate protection for their personal information."

According to the Cabinet Office, cyber crime costs the UK economy £27 billion every year, with consumers accounting for an estimated £3.1 billion of this total.
