Broadband speeds have seen Uttlesford in Essex named as one of the country's most desirable places to live.

The district climbed 12 places on last year in the annual Halifax Quality of Life report, which takes into account everything from employment rates and health to traffic congestion and broadband provision.

Only Hart in Hampshire, Tunbridge Wells in Kent, Wokingham in Berkshire, and Waverley and Elmbridge in Surrey appeared above Uttlesford on the list.

Howard Rolfe, Uttlesford District Council's cabinet member for community partnerships and engagement, told the Saffron Walden Weekly News that it is "very pleasing" to see the area rising up the rankings.

"However, on occasions like these it is important to remember that in an area like this which is considered in such positive terms, we do still have people out of work and in need," he stressed.

Residents in Uttlesford can access high-speed broadband thanks to Essex-based internet service provider Buzcom's decision to roll out its FibreWiFi proposition in the area.
