BT fibre broadband win applauded in Innerleithen
A Scottish Borders community is celebrating its victory in BT's Race to Infinity, which will see fibre optic broadband brought to the area over the coming months.

The telecoms giant named Innerleithen as one of the six winners in the scheme, despite 278 votes for the town being wiped from its total in the final week before voting closed on New Year's Eve, according to the Southern Reporter.

Brian McCrow, a Cardrona local who headed up the area's campaign for super-fast broadband, said he had been "astounded" by the response to the project from his fellow residents.

Rather than the "typical" Scottish cynicism he had predicted, Mr McCrow stated interest in the campaign had accelerated, adding: "There were people saying they don't even have a computer but would vote just to help the community."

Baschurch in Shropshire, Blewbury in Oxfordshire, Caxton and Madingley in Cambridgeshire and Whitchurch in Hampshire were the five other winners in the broadband initiative.
