BT's fibre optic broadband service will provide "life-changing" benefits to residents of a Warwickshire village, a campaigner has said.

Marton has been named by the telecoms giant as one of four communities added to the list of winners of its Race to Infinity initiative, which sought the areas of the UK with the highest levels of demand for super-fast broadband.

The development will see the local home phone exchange upgraded by early 2012 at the latest to offer download speeds of up to 40Mbps to properties in the village.

Andy Coles, who led Marton's Race to Infinity campaign, said the move will enable more people to work from home and create more jobs in the area.

"We have absolutely no doubt that the difference it will make to our villagers will become increasingly life-changing," he added.

The news has also been welcomed in Capel, Surrey - one of the other three locations added to the winners' list - with district councillor Iain Murdoch stating faster internet is "essential" in rural communities.
