BT to bring fibre optic broadband to Derry
BT is set to make a Northern Irish city one of the first in the UK to be entirely connected by fibre optic broadband.

The telecoms giant will install £3 million of equipment in Derry with the aim of bringing the technology to all of the 21,000 homes and 6,000 businesses in the area by this autumn, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

This development was announced as BT was unveiled as the first major partner for Derry's year as City of Culture, which will take place in 2013.

Interim director of Derry's Culture Company Oonagh McGillion welcomed the move, commenting: "BT is an international brand and that gives a strong level of confidence to anyone considering investing in the city."

This time last year, BT announced it would roll out super-fast broadband to 30,000 properties across Northern Ireland during 2010 as part of its up to £1.5 billion UK-wide spending programme on the technology.

Bangor was one of 63 locations earmarked to benefit from the upgrades by last summer.
