North Yorkshire is the latest region in line to benefit from BT's programme of fibre optic broadband rollouts.

The scheme, which is part of the telecoms giant's £2.5 billion super-fast broadband project, will affect as many as 46,000 homes and businesses in York and Harrogate, reports the Yorkshire Post.

Andrew Waller, leader of York Council, said upgraded internet connections are vital if York's image of being a "science city" is to be upheld in the coming years.

"We need to make sure that broadband coverage is improved across the whole county to encourage the growth of businesses in the technology and science sector," Mr Waller added.

The newspaper pointed out York is currently among the top ten cities in the UK in terms of broadband coverage, although it noted other parts of the county are lagging behind.

This news comes just days after BT revealed around 20,000 properties in Warwick and Kenilworth will also be upgraded to fibre optic broadband, with the work set to be finished in the coming weeks.
