Hyperoptic chief questions broadband progress
The chairman of an internet firm has said the UK's broadband may not be as fast as analysts assert.

Recent studies have claimed that the UK has the quickest internet download speeds in Europe, but Boris Ivanovic, who heads the Hyperoptic company, said there were a number of issues with the statistics this is based on, reports the Guardian.

"The overall conclusion that the UK has the best broadband in Europe is highly questionable as broadband infrastructure in other European countries, especially in Scandinavia, is far superior to ours at the moment," Mr Ivanovic said.

Ofcom's statistics found that 77 per cent of Britons bought goods or services online last year, substantially higher than continental partners.

Only 68 per cent of people in Germany used the internet for a similar purpose in 2013, while France (59 per cent), Spain (32 per cent) and Italy (20 per cent) were substantially lower.

Indeed, Italy consistently ranked poorly across online internet usage statistics, with 34 per cent of its population having never been on the internet, compared to eight per cent in the UK.
