Melrose welcomes arrival of superfast broadband
Superfast broadband has arrived in Melrose, much to the delight of local residents and businesses.

The high-speed technology has come to the town thanks to the £410 million Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme.

An official launch took place to mark the arrival of fibre broadband in the area, with BT Fibre Programme Director Liz Mallinson, players from the local rugby club, and representatives from Scottish Borders Council in attendance. The authority has invested £8.4 million in delivering better broadband to homes and businesses throughout the region.

Executive Member for Economic Development at Scottish Borders Council Stuart Bell explained: "Our beautiful scenery and great towns and communities like Melrose attract visitors and businesses and new residents to come to the Borders, but they need and deserve the best communications capability."

Overall, 56,500 premises across 14 local authority areas are set to be connected to the superfast service during this phase of the rollout, with speeds of 80Mbps on their way to these properties this autumn.

Altogether, the Digital Scotland connectivity project will bring better broadband to 95 per cent of premises in Scotland before the end of 2017.
