'Mole ploughing' brings better broadband to rural Cumbria
Superfast broadband has arrived in rural Cumbria thanks to a technique known as 'mole ploughing'.
Known as the Fell End Broadband project, the innovative work involved small diggers drilling through rough terrain to lay fibre optic cables underneath the land, allowing for superfast internet connections to reach 58 premises in the area.
The work was headed up by Ravenstonedale Parish Council and was in the pipeline for around four years, as funding was raised and BT provided materials and labour for it.
Locals have praised the arrival of the high-speed technology, with one business owner, Paul Bosnall, who manages the Fat Lamb Country Inn and Restaurant, commenting: "We've gone from about 2Mbps to around 60Mbps, which is fantastic. We could have gone much faster, but we decided that would be OK for now."
He added the arrival of superfast broadband would help to improve the experiences of guests staying at the inn, as they would be able to keep in touch with family and upload pictures of their trip quickly and easily.
