Outgoing Swindon council chief teased with broadband router as parting gift
Former Swindon council leader Rod Bluh has been given a wireless router as a comical leaving present.
The memento was given to the Conservative councillor by the local Labour group in reference to the town's much-maligned Digital City Wi-Fi project, which took place under his tenure, reports the Swindon Advertiser.
Council chiefs agreed to invest around £400,000 in the initiative, but Digital City only installed an estimated £200,000 worth of Wi-Fi equipment in Highworth and failed to roll out wireless internet services across the borough, or repay the loan.
Former Labour group leader Derique Montaut, who presented the somewhat cheeky gift, told Mr Bluh: "Wherever you go you will never be without your Wi-Fi."
While the Digital City initiative was unsuccessful, a commercial scheme from UK Broadband last year made Swindon the first borough in the UK to benefit from a universal 4G Long-Term Evolution wireless network.
