Homes and businesses in rural Rutland are set to benefit from £180,000 of government funding to enable them to connect to superfast broadband.

The cash has been awarded to Digital Rutland, which has been helping local people to access the high-speed service over the past few years.

Since 2011, almost 17,000 homes have been connected to fibre optic broadband and all ten telephone exchanges in the county have been upgraded.

Digital Rutland began working to connect homes and businesses to faster broadband after people in some of the more rural parts of the county were told they would not be covered by commercial providers.

Primarily, the project is funded by BT, Rutland County Council and Broadband Delivery UK, but this latest injection of cash has come from the government funded Superfast Extension Project.

Councillor Terry King said: "We are hopeful that this extra funding gives us the opportunity to extend our remaining work even further."
