Connecting Devon and Somerset has chosen its new broadband provider for its superfast fibre optic scheme.

The Cosmic Peninsula Consortium has won a £1 million contract as part of the Get Up to Speed! programme, which aims to bring fibre optic broadband to thousands of households across the region.

Cosmic had previously been given the project as part of a partnership with Cambridge-based YTKO, but this fell through after it was re-tendered and the timescales changed.

Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, Cabinet Member for Economy and Growth on Devon County Council, said: "The Get up to Speed! programme is an important element of Connecting Devon and Somerset. High-speed broadband [will] develop businesses, connect communities and bring about real economic growth."

Exchanges in Moretonhampstead, Holsworthy, Sticklepath, Bradford on Tone and Bishops Lydeard have already been updated as part of the Get up to Speed! programme, and dozens more will be upgraded in the near future.
