Two companies have been shortlisted to acquire South Yorkshire's beleaguered Digital Region super-fast broadband network.

Construction of the network began in 2008 and coverage currently stands at around 80 per cent of local homes and businesses, but the project has struggled to turn a profit after failing to partner with any high-profile internet service providers.

Digital Region posted an operating loss of £14 million and is looking for a buyer to ensure that the infrastructure achieves its original remit of "digital transformation" across South Yorkshire.

Although the organisation has not confirmed the identity of any of the firms bidding to acquire the network, a statement from Digital Region revealed that 29 expressions of interest were received in the initial stage of the procurement process.

The existing owners are now working with two shortlisted bidders in the final stage.

"A world-class super-fast broadband infrastructure is now in place and we're working to ensure that the people and businesses of South Yorkshire benefit from the transformational potential it offers," Digital Region added.
