Underwater cable damage causes Isle of Wight broadband outage
Consumers on the Isle of Wight have seen their broadband services affected by damage to an underwater cable running between Portsmouth and Ryde.

BT revealed around 600 customers served by the Freshwater and Newport exchanges - particularly those in the Calbourne area - had their broadband and landline connections cut off.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, a spokesperson for the telecoms giant said engineers began working to restore the services on Thursday morning (January 10th 2013), with many subscribers reconnected later that day.

"We are sorry for the obvious inconvenience, our engineers are working as quickly as they can and we are also investigating the cause of the damage," they added.

BT insisted that the problem is unconnected to another broadband outage that hit Sky customers on Wednesday.

These are the latest issues to affect broadband customers on the Isle of Wight. Last February, some residents in Yarmouth, Ventnor and Freshwater were cut off following a fault in an underground fibre optic cable about 20km from Southampton.
