Broadband is playing a key role in transforming the way in which charities respond to humanitarian disasters, it is claimed.

"The popularity of social media networks and online in general provides us with opportunities to broaden our immediate communications response to emergencies," said Andrew Coombes, senior digital press officer for Oxfam GB.

Online tools and services such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook enabled Oxfam to "amplify" its fundraising appeal in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, he revealed.

The speed with which the charity was able to transmit its message to people via the internet was intrinsic in raising public awareness and engagement following the disaster, Mr Coombes added.

Meanwhile, three experts in the US are said to be utilising broadband technology as part of a global aid effort for the people of Haiti and Chile.

The employees of Orlando-based Data Transfer Solutions are using geographic information systems to pinpoint areas of the earthquake-hit countries that need urgent help.
