Derry to spend public money on boosting Wi-Fi coverage
Derry will use public money to extend free wireless broadband access across the city centre, the local council's chief executive and town clerk has explained.

The city is one of 12 to benefit from the UK government's latest round of urban super-fast broadband funding and will be given a share of £50 million to improve connectivity.

Sharon O'Connor, writing for the Belfast Telegraph, said the cash will be used to expand the current wireless network to cover additional parts of Derry and enhance existing capacity to ensure future demand is met.

In addition, the funding will finance a voucher scheme to cover the cost of connecting small and medium-sized enterprises to ultra-fast broadband services.

Explaining the benefits of faster web access and improved coverage, Ms O'Connor said: "It will enable [businesses] to enjoy faster upload and download speeds, help with the transportation of large data files and improve communication services such as conference calls and video conferencing."
