Government reveals broadband minister
A minister for broadband has been announced by the coalition government, as it seeks to push forward with its commitment to the expansion of superfast networks.

Conservative Ed Vaizey is to take on the broadband and telecoms brief, in the role of communications minister.

He will be jointly responsible with Jeremy Hunt the culture secretary for ensuring the government meets its commitment to the roll out of high-speed broadband, such as fibre-optic technology, and the overseeing of the implementation of the Digital Economy Act.

The Act was controversially rushed through the closing stages of the last parliament and has been criticised for some measures it would introduce, such as a limits on internet file sharing.

Despite this, the new coalition will not repeal the Act, Jeremy Hunt told paidContent:UK.

The government has stressed that it is committed to ensuring broadband access for all and this would be welcomed by everyone in the industry.

Ensuring households have broadband was deemed extremely important by the Internet Service Providers' Association, and it said the government should intervene where the market would not provide.
