Faster business and home broadband will be a key part of Conservative Party plans to make technology central to the UK economy.

The party's 2010 election manifesto places heavy emphasis on fibre optic broadband enabling small businesses, residents and the country as a whole to embrace the opportunities that the internet offers.

Plans to introduce superfast broadband infrastructure that will offer speeds of 100Mbps, as well as making all government spending data accessible online are among the ambitious proposals included in the document, which was unveiled yesterday (April 13th).

Shadow culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "We need to ensure we have a superfast broadband structure that gives the UK a competitive advantage over other countries. Our ambitious plans will make this happen."

The Labour Party has also set out plans to provide superfast broadband to the majority of homes and businesses in the UK.

For some rural residents however, this promise has come too late, with the village of Lyddington in Leicestershire officially launching its community funded superfast broadband network this morning, offering speeds of up to 40Mbps.
