UK Broadband (UKB) has launched Britain's first ever commercial 4G network in Southwark, London, offering a boost to businesses and consumers in the area and marking the first Time Division-Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) 3.5GHz deployment in the world.

The broadband provider plans to work with a variety of partners in order to offer the services to consumers, companies and people within the public sector, in an area covering the Southbank and Borough areas of Southwark.

UKB is the country's largest holder of 4G spectrum, meaning it has the ability to roll out this model of internet access efficiently and quickly, deploying six 20Mhz channels and allowing a large number of users to access next-generation broadband speeds.

The company will make use of both indoor and outdoor units developed in collaboration with Huawei to deliver the high-capacity broadband.

Nicholas James, UKB's chief executive officer, said the company is "excited" about getting the project underway and pleased to have the opportunity to make use of Huawei's TD-LTE model to "deliver the best solution" to consumers.

"Utilising Huawei's equipment, UKB's spectrum and our combined expertise, the availability of LTE in the UK from today will give a significant boost to the UK government's broadband agenda," said Victor Zhang, chief executive officer of Huawei UK.

UKB plans to offer bespoke solutions to broadband problems, in that it will not attempt to develop high-speed internet infrastructure to an area unless it is fully convinced there is a demand for it, and the company will often work with one core customer in order to generate a solution to their web needs.

Wireless access networks provider Airspan Networks recently collaborated with Virgin Media to expand trials of super-fast 4G, in an attempt to demonstrate that its technology is effective in built-up areas and can operate to maximum efficiency based on customer demand.
