Network operator 3 Mobile has announced the end of the first phase of its mission to boost its 3G coverage.

The company has been upgrading its infrastructure for the past three years, spending around £400 million and expanding its number of network sites from 7,500 to 12,400.

According to the mobile broadband provider, this process has improved its coverage by 50,000 square kilometres - more than twice the size of Wales - and means its 3G reception now covers almost 97 per cent of the population.

The project required 8.5 million man hours of work from more than 3,300 engineers.

"We have built a 3G network that reaches further than ever before, as well as bringing more capacity into urban areas where our customers need it most," commented chief executive of 3 Mobile UK Kevin Russell.

In August 2010, the service provider announced new plans to spend £4 million on improving its network in Glasgow in a bid to boost 3G reception and mobile internet uptake.
