Home broadband services have transformed the travel industry, it is reported.

Consumers in general used to book package holidays through travel agents, but the wealth of information at their fingertips now means that they are arranging their own tailor-made trips, according to a new report published by Total Insight.

Interestingly, more mature home broadband customers are particularly getting involved in the online travel community, with 48 per cent of 45 to 54-year olds having written a review about a hotel in the last six months, compared to 19 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds.

The report suggests that these older broadband users are perhaps not aware of the fact that they are taking part in a social media revolution.

Some 37 per cent of people booked their last short break accommodation directly, compared to just ten per cent who booked through a travel agent.

Nick Oram, director of Total Media, said: "The benefit of being online is that it is like having a travel agent in your living room. You can sit there and within a couple of clicks you get a dozen prices on the things you wanted."
